Jessica Parris Westbrook

Bio: Jessica Westbrook is Director of Technology Initiatives and Assistant Professor in The Department of Contemporary Practices at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, she is working towards the meaningful integration of new media and technology-based art and design practices at the "foundation" level. Westbrook's studio practice draws from an aethetic of desire, contradiction, cultural landscapes, and systems. She considers her works and contributions sections of visual language/typology culled from a complex matrix of assets, reconfigured and repurposed per space and time. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including: the Carnegie Museum, Hirshorn Museum of American Art, Axiom Center for New and Experimental Media, Eyedrum, Syracuse University, and ICA Grand Rapids. Westbrook collaborates with Adam Trowbridge, as Channel TWo (CH2), a research and development media construct. CH2 was awarded a Terminal Commission in 2010, and a Turbulence Commission in 2011. Westbrook and Trowbridge recently co-edited, Media-N, Journal of the New Media Caucus (Fall 2010), "Dynamic Coupling," addressing issues of collaboration in research, practice, and academia. My projects explore desire, visual cues, cultural artifacts, systems, language, and contradictory sensations that vacillate between great fortune and impending catastrophe. Always semantic in nature and modular in form, I consider my productions a section of visual language culled from a complex matrix of assets, reconfigured and repurposed per space and time.

I use design as a way to negotiate the struggles between information, organizing, and understanding. Design thinking (creative) and design methods (process) are tools that can be implemented in any scenario. I am most interested in the potential for discovery, intervention, and innovation that can be found in the spaces where design, art, technology, anthropology, psychology and community intersect.

Client based works, including web sites, and stand alone applications.

In addition to studio practices and teaching responsibilities, I am heavily invested in interdisciplinary collaborative experiments and initiatives that seek out new definitions for art/artists and challenge the power and influence of conventional socio-economic paradigms. I love participating in processes involving dialogue, and an exchange or sharing of knowledge/insight.
Channel TWo (CH2) (; current
CH2 happens slightly above the noise level, between words that organize our communities and the chaos that lies beyond them. CH2 is a post-network instance that begins with entertainment-based narrative and internet behavior as a common, shared language. CH2 research includes media habits, algorithms, embedded marketing, and systems of control. CH2 develops custom software and generates 'localized' content involving a range of tactics and outcomes: nonlinear media sequences, immersive simulations, open source applications, and game environments, as well as responsive sculpture, installation, single-channel video, text and poetry, theater, performance, audio, conceptual and networked projects. CH2 often edits existing media. Interactivity, simulation, and autonomous agents offer ways of introducing structured chaos that unfolds even after works are situated or released. CH2 works with global media empires and brands, and marketing and product placement, reflexively inserting its own loving layer of hyper-identification into the contemporary landscape. Channel TWo is a collaborative project involving Adam Trowbridge (T), Jessica Westbrook (W) and beta tester Oskar (o).

SEED is retired.
Art and design present a multiplicity of conditions, considerations, and motivations. I relish this complexity and find joy in the interdisciplinary nature of graphic arts, the diversity of media involved, the research and iterative process, and the potential for change, adaptation, and (re)invention between forms and media specific expectations. Beyond introducing the tools and processes of the disciplines I teach, I have a responsibility to ask questions, present scenarios (theoretical and real world), and model/share the kind of tangible professional/creative practice(s) the student might engage with, whether it be art, design, or some hybrid scenario between communities and concerns. My approach is very student centered. I challenge students to question their preconceptions, identify their own goals, and discover their own meaningful conceptual objectives. Read more on teaching soon (including syllabi)...
Edu includes the degrees I have earned. Projects includes exhibitions, performances, design commissions, talks/panels/workshops, individual artist grants, publication/write-ups, and press. Teaching includes appointments, courses, academic committees, and academic grants. Professional Experience includes relevant industry and entrepreneurial roles.
